Current Reading List (5th week of November 2012)

Insofar, I've got a handful on my shelf right now since preliminary exams will be visiting in a couple of weeks and yeah, that meant sleepless nights with steaming cups of tea, highlighted photocopied handouts in blue or green with red ink notes on the side and more reference books on my desk.  One of my few closest friends even asked me this morning how can i afford to even read a novel even under the constraints of multiple quizzes for the next day (luckily, there will be an inter-school competition tomorrow and we're excused for the upper half of the day since a classmates of ours is a contestant and through the efforts of our persuasive class president who tirelessly tried to woo our professors to drop the quizzes tomorrow. Haha).

First one on my list is a political thriller by Vince Flynn entitled The Third Option. The copy I am reading at the moment is actually my aunt's and is dated back to 2000. It actually my third book from Vince Flynn with Term Limits and Transfer Of Power as my first two. Currently I'm on chapter 24 and am very eager to finish it before the week ends so I could start reviewing my notes for the incoming month. What I like about Vince Flynn novels are that the books are action packed and every page is like an adventure that you can just put down. Some of the books with the same genre that I have read are Steve Berry's Cotton Malone Series and Dan Brown's works, I've read The Bourne Identity and it was good amidst the slight slow pace of the turn of events in the novel. That's one of the reasons I can't stop reading books by Vince Flynn, he writes with a fast pace and unpredictable plots to match. He puts his mind in the character's mind and make it more interesting and wort the read. For fans of political thrillers who has not come across Vince Flynn yet, I recommend this author to you and let your critical mind be the judge.

Next on my list is a nonfiction book by F.E. Peters entitled Islam: A Guide for Jews and Christians. Lately I have been very curious about this monotheistic religion and I don't know why. Yes, I'm a devout Catholic but I'm pretty much impartial with one's beliefs and religion which led me to have friends who are of different religions.I've acquired this book just this afternoon at a local thrift bookstore and started reading it before passing out in my bed when I got home. I expect to learn and understand more of the Muslim faith as I want to understand more of today's society. I'll post a picture of the book on my next post as it is a bit too late to even bother (and I'm a bit lethargic lately, I have a book report due on Thursday which I'm not really motivated to do.)

Third and last on my list is a book subject to mixed criticisms, E.L. James's 50 Shades of Grey. I'm only inclined to read this book because of my book report due on Thursday for my class on Literature. I find it very annoying since from the start, many of my friends told me that I should read it though I really had a bad feeling about it and turns out I was right to be stubborn about not reading it. I tried reading a chapter once, but the choice of words and the articulate descriptions of the erotic scenes made me feel uneasy. So I put the book down and vowed never to read it again, but guess what? My teacher just had to pick a book and this little buddy was it. It felt like blood drained out of my face as I am faced with yet another hard situation. Glad there's Wikipedia to rely on and had to skip most of the parts but still know the main context of the story.

On the onset of my friends' addiction to this series I shared views and opinions with my aunt who is also an avid bookworm. She said that it was normal for me to feel the way I feel because I am only 18 and wouldn't be able to understand it like those who are in its market range. And like she likes to put it, it was not meant for literary inspiration but was for commercial purposes that is why it is tabbed under the adult fiction shelf. But I can't get how young people could be easily hooked with these themes, I don't really know, that's just how I view it ad maybe I'm just to much of conservative to read such themes.

I'll be updating more in the incoming days with what I am up too. Been planning to visit a coffee shop called Madge's in La Paz Market with friends this weekend. Hope we could materialize it and so I could feature it in my blog. xx
