Set in the perspectives of Schuyler as she and Jack set out to find the Gate of Promise and its gatekeeper, Mimi as she launched a search and rescue party for Kingsley in Hell with Oliver, and Allegra as she narrates how she had broken her bond with Charles to be with Ben.
Schuyler and Jack, as left off from Misguided Angel, are now on the run from the bounty hunters Mimi commanded, who was named Regent, to bring her brother to face the consequences of his actions left Florence (that housed a false gate) to Egypt, where Schuyler believes where the real Gate of Promise is located. While in Cairo, the two are supposed to meet with someone who knew the whereabouts of the gatekeeper, Catherine of Siena, rather they bumped into the two star-born twins: Sam and Ted Lennox and Deming and Dehua Chen, who are in a mission to find the remaining Nephilims, offsprings of Silver Bloods with female Red Bloods, who are killing Blue Bloods (as what Mimi and Deming faced in Misguided Angel).
Later, the six of them formulate a plan to find out what's really going on and to find Catherine of Siena in order to fully understand how the Gate of Promise works.
Back in New York, Mimi learned that when a soul goes into subvertio, he never dies, only gets trapped into Hell, giving her hope that maybe, Kingsley is there, waiting to be rescued so they can continue the love that had been prematurely desisted.
Oliver Hazard-Perry, former Conduit to Schuyler Van Alen and now freed from the bond the Sacred Kiss gives to familiars with their vampires through a witch named Freya (story told in Bloody Valentine), was now assigned as Conduit to Mimi. After Misguided Angel, he now sees a different and mature Mimi vowing to support whatever the Regent decided to do to protect the Coven from disbanding. He decides to go with Mimi in a mission to rescue Kingsley Martin, oblivious to the real reason why Mimi needed him to come with her, subtly hinting him if he really is determined to do this.
In Hell, Mimi discovers that the Duke of Hell is living his heart's content in maintaining the peace and making improvements in the seventh floor of Hell, much to Mimi's disappointment. A day before Mimi decided to leave Hell, as she is resolved that Kingsley doesn't want to leave, she and Kingsley had a heated discussion about Mimi's real reason in coming to Hell, blame it on the pride of these two angels. After the issues have been settled and both understood the situation, Kingsley finally agreed to ascend to mid-world to be with Mimi to be only halted with a price to save a soul from Hell, as amended after Orpheus' tragedy. Here comes Oliver's real role, only to be saved by Mimi in the last minute bargaining her soul rather than Ollie's.
The three returns in Cairo with Mimi not remembering anything and with only one thing in mind: to face Jack in a Blood Trial and avenge herself from the disgrace her brother has brought upon her by running with Schuyler. In the end, she couldn't bring herself to kill Jack and with this single act of forgiveness, she felt her soul returning. As a resolution, the twins have agreed to serve their true master, Lucifer, so he can unmake the bond he once gave them so they'll be free from the bond but will turn to the light in the last minute.
As told in Bloody Valentine, Allegra Van Alen had a vision that she will bear a daughter with Ben Chase and that this estranged love affair with her familiar will be her doom. Much to her horror, she fled from Endicott Academy the day after she had the vision.
Now, after a few years and finally reunited with Charles, they went to San Francisco for business reasons. While perusing through a few art pieces, Allegra saw one that looked very much like her, in a clinic cot and remembered the time when she and Ben shared a tv once in the clinic when they were in Endicott. And to her compulsion, bought the piece and was invited by the attendant of a dinner with the artist himself, Stephen Bendix Chase.
After meeting Ben and his pregnant girlfriend, Allegra was now determined to end whatever infatuation she had with him only to be severed again on the day of her bonding with Charles.
A broken bond between angels are a taboo that eventually leads to a blood trial wherein the two will engaged in a battle to the death and Charles couldn't bring himself to kill Allegra yet he has her captive. Later on, he released her willingly so that she could live with the one she really loved.
Forwarded to the present, it was revealed in Misguided Angel that she has awoken from her coma and went to find Charles, who was trapped in the White Darkness (As told in the Van Alen Legacy). There, they have both settled in with the secrets that Charles have kept from Allegra since Florence, that making the reason of Allegra's mistrust of him.
De la Cruz never fails to amaze me with every book and so I am giving this a 5 out of 5.
